Why CrossFit

The needs of an Olympic athlete and our grandparents differ by degree not kind. In that spirit, CrossFit works for anyone, because the functional movements that are essential to improving fitness and maintaining functional independence are all 100% scalable to each individual. For example, on a deadlift day, one athlete may move a barbell weighing 400 lb while the other moves a broomstick. With appropriate scaling, an athlete will make significant fitness gains by working at their relative level of physical and psychological tolerance.

Yes, you can do CrossFit – our coaches and community are here to support you and your goals!

The sense of community at Cryptid CrossFit is perhaps our greatest strength; everyone knows one another, and there is always someone to help with technique, compare WOD results, discuss competitions, or inquire about the latest home improvement project you were talking about last week. Your progress is spurred by the momentum of the group as a whole – we celebrate your wins and support your progress.

The Cryptid CrossFit Coaches

Hi everyone, I’m Andrew Boyce. I’m the head coach here at Cryptid CrossFit and I run a rehab clinic called Boyce Performance & Rehab. I have spent my life in fitness, whether it’s competitive track and field, CrossFit, powerlifting, 5k/marathon running, or weightlifting. My obsession has always been to help people move better and live healthier, happier life. What I love most about our gym is the community and the collective will to better oneself through exercise.

I have a wife named Amy and a son named Calvin. Together we live in SW Michigan and we are excited to settle down and grow our family in West Michigan. In my free time, I like to hunt, fish, camp, and explore.

Hi! I’m Dany. I’m a CF-L2 CrossFit coach, and I’ve been coaching since 2018 and I am a Coach here at Cryptid CrossFit. I am an Army Reservist of 17+ years and I work as a Physical Therapy Tech in the military. I enjoy teaching people about the human body and how to move safely with (and without!) weight to reduce injury and reach your fitness goals! I’m not going to be the fittest person you know (I like food, OK?), but I am going to try my best to help you be the strongest version of yourself. I am a mother to an amazing little boy whom you may occasionally see running around the gym getting swole with me!

Hi! I’m Taylor. I’m a senior at Western Michigan University studying exercise science and will be receiving my bachelors of science in the spring. I play rugby for the university and love the opportunities it has given me to compete. I have been a lifelong athlete and fitness has been a huge part of my life through attempting to become a better athlete myself. I found my passion in helping others become the most fit version of themselves.

Hi, I’m Meredith.

I walked into my first CrossFit box in 2015 in California where I’m originally from. I was drawn to CrossFit due to my background in high school rowing (or Crew). I was used to group fitness and to pushing myself, which is similar to CrossFit. As an adult, CrossFit gave me the same environment that I had when I was a teenager on the rowing team. After years of being an athlete I decided to get my L1 so that I could continue to grow in my knowledge of CrossFit and deepen my connection to the community. Outside of CrossFit I am a Psychology Professor at Kalamazoo Valley Community College where I get to share my love of psychology with an awesome student body. If you ever have a psych question let me know as I love to talk about it.

Hello, my name is Chris. I’m a Certified Crossfit Trainer, (CF-L3 / CCFT).

I started my career with a typical desk job in engineering. About 10 years into my career, I found myself significantly overweight and very unhealthy, but that was only my first problem. My second problem was I seemed to always be busy and short on time. Problem number 3, my biggest problem, was I was completely clueless on what to do about all these problems.

I tried everything from crazy fad diets to excessive time on the treadmill, nothing worked. The lightbulb went off a couple months in. Engineers solve problems, I can do my research and figure this out.

Long story short, it took me a few months to discover the right path for me. I used CrossFit to lose the weight and regain my health. I started CrossFit on one journey, and now that it’s impacted my life, I am on a mission to help 10,000 people in our community to improve and enhance their quality of life.

As a CrossFit Trainer with a background in engineering, I use my skill set in CrossFit to help people break down their problem and find a system that works for them. I use our values of Community, Fun, and Health to create positive behaviors that are easy to follow to improve our member’s quality of life. I truly believe if you are active and engaged in the community and having fun every time you show up to the gym, that improved health is an unavoidable byproduct.

Thank you for reading my bio and for checking out our website. Please reach out if you have any questions. Thanks.

Hi, I’m Ramon! I’m a junior at Western Michigan University studying exercise science. I’ll be getting my bachelor’s degree in the summer of 2025 and moving on to Physical Therapy school (fingers crossed). I’ve been an athlete since high school, engaging in both swimming and soccer. I started doing CrossFit at the beginning of my junior year in college right here at Cryptid CrossFit. It is an amazing experience to walk into a box full of liked minded people and get a good workout in. That is what draws me to this community, the unity and camaraderie there is in every workout. I’ve always wanted to help people live a fulfilling life, and what better way to do so than being the best version of yourself. Hence, I decided to start the process of becoming a PT and a CrossFit coach. Though I am just beginning, I hope to make a change in the world, even if it’s just making someone smile or feel good after the workout.
